Meetings of the Board of Commissioners in Forsyth County, N.C., have long opened with mostly Christian prayers, and a majority of the commission is determined to keep it that way. As far as those commissioners are concerned, what the Christian majority wants, the Christian majority should get.

Jeff Gerritt: Detroit schools chief’s raise sends wrong message

Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb just got an $81,000 raise, boosting his pay under a one-year contract extension to $425,000. Bobb has become a rock star in Michigan for taking on waste, fraud and corruption, but whether he’s worth that paper is practically irrelevant. A raise that, by itself, amounts to more than what teachers make sends the wrong message to a district that is being asked — rightfully so — to make sacrifices and concessions. Leaders lead by example.

Gretchen Voyle: Squirrels are cause of damage

Q: A very weird thing has happened to one of my big maple trees. About 6 feet off the ground, there are strips of missing bark. Some of the bark is missing, while other pieces are just peeled down. I don’t know much about wild animals, but is it possible a porcupine or a beaver did this?
