In the past few weeks, two public displays of politics have caused some controversy in the county — the Democrats marching in the Howell Jaycees Melon Festival Parade, and the Knights of Columbus putting up crosses on their property to protest abortion.

Support made concert a success

On Aug. 18, Brighton Community Education presented Dave Mason at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts as a fundraiser to benefit Adult Education, Tot Spot, Aquatics, Enrichment, Brighton Senior Center and the the BCPA. Rock ‘n’ roll fans were treated to an awesome concert, and we would like to thank the following for their contribution to this successful event:

I chose to live near Howell High

We all make choices in life. When my family moved into downtown Howell in 1995, we were aware of the pros and cons of city living. The best thing about living in town is the proximity to everything. We walk to the library, entertainment and schools. It is great to be so close to everything. It was our choice for our family.

Paying to school non-residents?

I read with interest your series about the migrant workers, but there were some issues that I did not see addressed: Does anyone check the legal status of these people? Just because they have been coming for years does not mean they have legal status. Are the taxpaying citizens of Michigan paying for the summer education of the non-resident children?

Projects through DDA don’t have to compete for limited funding

It certainly makes sense to change St. Paul Street and West Street in downtown Brighton into one-way roads. Now, St. Paul hits Grand River Avenue just north of Main Street right where there is heavy traffic, so it is difficult for drivers to exit St. Paul onto Grand River going in either direction. Eliminating those turns by sending drivers the other way on St. Paul makes good sense.
