On behalf of the Livingston County Consortium on Aging, I’d like to thank vendors, sponsors, entertainment, speakers and the media for making the 23rd annual Senior Power Day our biggest and best ever. More than 500 seniors visited for exhibits, entertainment, lunch and educational sessions.

With the mayors of two of Michigan’s largest cities (Lansing, population 120,000, is sixth and Southfield, population 78,000, is 14th) on the Democratic ticket for governor, urban issues should finally get some focus. As CEOs of cities that have struggled with falling property values and wilting state revenue, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence need to force the debate on a new statewide urban agenda.

Michigan voters and taxpayers must be among the world’s biggest suckers. How else do you explain the fact that they provide high pay and outlandish benefits to lawmakers who shamelessly refuse to do even their basic job?
